Q & A with Valley Speakers President Peter Lin

Q: You've been with Valley Speakers for two years. What motivated you to join, and what keeps you coming back?

Five years ago I was very self-conscious, self-judgmental and lacked confidence in public speaking. At the time I was a software engineer so I was able to perform my job without much speaking.

After making a poor presentation at work and feeling bad about it for weeks, I decided to join Toastmasters. Toastmasters gave me the opportunity to learn how to speak in public in a supportive environment where I was able to develop confidence.

Q: Can you think of specific instances when you were able to apply skills learned at Toastmasters in real life, whether at work or at home?

By participating in Toastmasters, you'll realize dramatic improvements in many areas of your life:
  • At work, communication with your employer and associates will become more effective and productive.
  • At home, interactions with family and friends will be easier, more enjoyable and more fulfilling.
  • In your community, you will become more effective in getting things said, planned and done.

Q: What do you say to those who are afraid of public speaking?

Toastmasters has improved my communication skills in my personal and social life. I am now confident when I speak in public. I actually think public speaking is fun and interesting. I've learned technical skills such as voice variation, gestures, eye contacts, content organization, time organization, and how to avoid grammatical errors from the manuals.

Q: What is your big idea for the future of Valley Speakers?

Community outreaches – there is a need in our community to improve public speaking skills. Valley Speakers Toastmasters plans to host short-term speech training and contests to introduce and promote Toastmasters in our community.

Enhanced club programs – The club's programs and topics are reviewed and approved by the executive committee to ensure topics are appropriate and interesting. The club also plans a quarterly debate within the club.

Surf and Sand

It's been less than two months since the beginning of 2010-2011 administrative year, and club membership is up. Welcome to Valley Speakers, James, Lormen and Ernestina!

Tonight's topic was Surf and Sand. Since the word of the day was "gourmet", Table Topic Master Byron decided to throw a curve ball and asked the question, "What would you have for your last meal?"

As usual, we got a variety of responses. Among them were ribs from Joanne's kitchen, hot dogs, strawberry shortcake, whales, dolphins and starfish, Mexican pomegranate dish and fresh sea urchin.

Bon appétit.

Next week's table topic is Plastic and Environment.

Toy Story

Thanks to our Toastmaster of the evening, Fabian, Table Topic Master, Juju and President Peter, we had another successful meeting.
The format was slightly different from usual in that Juju set the tone for the Table Topic (story telling - Toy Story) then we went around the room completing the story told by the speaker before. At the end of the night, we had one cohesive story - cannibalistic monkey toys go to space???
Sounds a bit crazy, but we had fun nonetheless. And that's what counts! We'll keep learning as long as we are having fun. Keep those crazy table topics coming!

Theme for next week: A far away land

Officer Installation Party --- Sindy

What a blast! Loy and Lucille generously hosted our 2010 Installation party at their beautiful home. As usual, we got as many gorgeous dishes as our splendid table topic speeches. Food, fun, good companies... where else can you find them all at one setting? Only in Valley Speakers!

Big THANKS to all officers!

See you all next Monday. Stay cool.

Open House 2010! --- Sindy

Our first Open House!

Beautiful summer night, delicious food, honorable guests, new and long-time members... doesn't it sound fun already? Of course we always learn beside having fun. From Table Topic, "Toastmaster and Me", our members sharing their experience of growth, support, and friendship in the club. Even our guests, Mae, Dianne, and Madison, also participate at their first meeting. This is how we learn.

We learn by doing.
See you next Monday!
